Mudflows in Ayni and Panjakent cause more than $1.2 million in damage
DUSHANBE, July 17, 2026 — Asia-Plus — Mudflows that struck Ayni district and Panjakent on July 11 and 12 caused preliminary damage estimated at more than 11 million somoni, or approximately 1.2 $ million, according to Tajikistan’s Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense.
Sixty-five homes damaged in Ayni district
A mudflow hit the villages of Dargh and Kazdon in Shamtuch jamoat (rural municipality), Ayni district, at around 3:42 p.m. on July 11 following heavy rainfall.
Homes, outbuildings, farmland, roads, vehicles, power lines and drinking-water networks were damaged.
A second mudflow occurred at around 4:30 p.m. on July 12, washing away sections of roads, bank-protection structures and part of the restoration work already completed.
Preliminary assessments show that 46 homes were damaged in Dargh and 19 in Kazdon. Three houses in Dargh were partially destroyed, while one house in Kazdon was completely destroyed.
Of 117 outbuildings affected, 25 were destroyed and 92 were buried under mud.
The disaster also flooded 98 household plots and killed 14 head of small livestock. One mosque was partially damaged, while another was covered by mud. The ground floor of a fruit-processing facility was also flooded.
Eleven vehicles were damaged, seven of them beyond repair, including a KamAZ truck.
The mudflows also damaged 29.07 hectares of farmland, 31.11 kilometers of irrigation channels, one pedestrian bridge, five kilometers of power lines, 23 utility poles, a transformer and a substation.
Around 5.2 kilometers of drinking-water networks were also damaged.
Five pieces of specialized equipment were deployed to clear riverbeds, reinforce banks and restore roads, electricity and water supplies.
