Barqi Tojik chief does not rule out power rationing this winter

Barqi Tojik chief does not rule out power rationing this winter
Tajikistan is likely to face another imbalance between electricity generation and consumption during the upcoming autumn-winter season, Barqi Tojik Chairman Mahmadumar Asozoda told a news conference in Dushanbe on July 13.
Asozoda did not say directly whether electricity rationing would be introduced this winter, but neither did he confirm that restrictions would be avoided.
According to him, one of the factors that could contribute to an electricity shortage is the inefficient use of power during the cold season.
Asozoda said the water level in the reservoir of the Nurek hydropower plant stood at 888.21 meters as of July 13.
He also said Tajikistan planned to import electricity from Uzbekistan during the coming winter.
Tajikistan receives Uzbek electricity each autumn and winter and returns an equivalent volume through exports during the summer, he explained.

«During the last autumn-winter period, Tajikistan imported 306 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, compared with 350 million kilowatt-hours the previous year. In summer, this electricity is returned to Uzbekistan and recorded as exports,» Asozoda said.
Under a government directive, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are expected to sign a power supply agreement before the start of the next autumn-winter season.
«During the cold period, Uzbekistan is expected to supply Tajikistan with the required volume of electricity,» he added.
Asozoda noted that electricity restrictions this year were fully lifted on February 27 because of lower consumption and favorable weather conditions. A year earlier, rationing remained in place until April.
Minister expects better electricity supply
Energy and Water Resources Minister Daler Juma said last week that he hoped electricity supplies during the coming autumn-winter season would be better than last year.
Responding to reporters’ questions, Juma said the country was already experiencing water shortages. Tajikistan has therefore reduced electricity exports and is seeking to store more water in reservoirs ahead of winter.
