Early marriage among leading causes of divorce in Tajikistan, says Committee on Family and Women’s Affairs

Early marriage among leading causes of divorce in Tajikistan, says Committee on Family and Women’s Affairs
Tajikistan registered 3,526 divorces in the first half of 2026, down by 591 from the same period last year, the Committee on Family and Women’s Affairs reported on July 15, citing civil registry data.
Following the dissolution of these marriages, 3,111 children were left living in single-parent families, 521 fewer than a year earlier.
The country also registered 27,563 marriages between January and June, a year-on-year decline of 2,793. Another 141 marriages were concluded after courts granted permission to lower the legal marriage age.
Despite the decline in divorces, the committee said family breakdown remains one of the country’s most pressing social problems.
Committee Chairperson Bunafsha Fayziddinzoda identified early marriage and young women’s lack of preparation for family life as major factors contributing to divorce.

Tajikistan doubled state fees for divorce on October 1, 2025, after President Emomali Rahmon signed amendments to the Law on State Fees.
Under the changes, the fee for an application filed by one spouse increased from 75 to 150 somoni. For a joint application, the fee rose from 375 to 750 somoni, while the charge for a divorce granted by a court increased from 525 to 1,050 somoni.
Parliament said the higher fees were intended to discourage divorce. The charges had previously been revised from 72–108 somoni to 500 somoni.
