Tajikistan’s healthcare institutions lack 1,100 doctors, Health Ministry says
Healthcare institutions in Tajikistan are short of 1,100 doctors, First Deputy Minister of Health and Social Protection of the Population Salomuddin Yusufi said at a news conference in Dushanbe on July 8.
According to him, the largest shortage is recorded in Khatlon province, where 323 doctors are needed. Sughd province lacks 297 doctors, while districts subordinate to the center are short of 263.
Another 78 doctors are needed in republican medical institutions, 22 in healthcare facilities in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), and 117 in medical institutions under other ministries and agencies.
The most acute shortages are among family doctors, psychiatrists, phthisiatricians — specialists who diagnose, treat and prevent tuberculosis — and several other medical specialists.
At the same time, according to the Ministry of Health, 16 doctors and 148 specialists with secondary medical education left the country in the first half of 2026. In 2025, 51 doctors and 266 mid-level medical workers went abroad.
Number of doctors rises, but shortage remains
As of the first half of 2026, Tajikistan’s healthcare institutions employed 22,763 doctors and 65,496 specialists with secondary medical education. This is 2,7% and 2,6% more, respectively, than during the same period last year.
According to preliminary data, the staffing level for doctors stands at 95,7%, while the staffing level for mid-level medical personnel has reached 100%, up 0.4 percentage points from a year earlier.
In the first six months of 2026, 1,142 doctors and 2,143 specialists with secondary medical education underwent certification.
Compared with the same period in 2025, the number of certified doctors increased by 537, from 605 to 1,142. However, the number of certified specialists with secondary medical education decreased by 937, from 3,080 to 2,143.
