Tajikistan to launch new state TV channel focused on foreign languages
Tajikistan plans to launch a new state-run television channel dedicated to foreign language education by the end of the year, Chairman of the Committee for TV and Radio Broadcasting Nosir Saidzoda announced at a news conference in Dushanbe on July 6.
According to Saidzoda, the channel is being established in line with a directive issued by President Emomali Rahmon in 2024.
The Committee for TV and Radio Broadcasting said the new broadcaster will air educational programs aimed at helping viewers learn foreign languages.
The announcement comes amid ongoing criticism from some media experts, who argue that maintaining numerous state-funded television channels is costly and that many of them have yet to adapt to modern broadcasting standards or fully meet the needs of the public.
No applications for nationwide private TV channel
Saidzoda also addressed the absence of a nationwide private television channel in Tajikistan, saying the committee had not received a single application to establish one over the past year.
He said the country currently has 16 privately owned television channels, all operating at the local or regional level. During the past year, private broadcasters only applied to renew their existing licenses.
According to the committee, Tajikistan has a total of 107 television and radio broadcasters and audiovisual production studios, including 15 state and 16 private television channels, as well as 10 state and 25 private radio stations.
