IAEA nuclear security training course held in Dushanbe
An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) training course for instructors on establishing and operating National Nuclear Security Support Centers concluded in Dushanbe on Friday, strengthening Tajikistan’s role in regional nuclear security cooperation.
The five-day course, held from June 22 to 26, was organized at the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Safety and Security Agency (CBRN SSA) under the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan. It brought together IAEA representatives, international experts and specialists to enhance national and regional capacity in nuclear security.
The opening ceremony was attended by National Academy of Sciences President Kobiljon Khushvakhtzoda, CBRN SSA Director Ilhom Mirsaidzoda, IAEA officials and course participants.
According to the CBRN SSA, hosting the training reflects the continued expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and the IAEA and recognition of the country’s growing role in the regional nuclear security framework.
The agency highlighted the importance of the Regional CBRN Safety, Security and Safeguards Center in Dushanbe, inaugurated by President Emomali Rahmon and Dushanbe Mayor Rustam Emomali. The center now serves as a regional platform for international training, specialist development, technical cooperation and the exchange of expertise in nuclear and radiation safety, physical protection and non-proliferation.
The course focused on preparing instructors capable of supporting the establishment and sustainable operation of National Nuclear Security Support Centers, which play a key role in training personnel, providing technical support, coordinating institutions and strengthening national nuclear security systems.
Participants discussed institutional models, strategic planning, resource assessment, laboratory development, equipment procurement, performance evaluation and interagency coordination. The program also included practical exercises, case studies, group discussions and presentations of international best practices.
Organizers said particular emphasis was placed on developing qualified personnel, strengthening technical capabilities and promoting a strong nuclear security culture to help countries address evolving security challenges.
