Body recovered from Panj River a week after crash involving GBAO governor
Rescuers searching for the victims of a vehicle accident involving Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) Governor Alisher Mirzonabot have recovered the body of a man from the Panj River, the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense (CES) said.
Orif Nozimiyon, head of the CES press center, told Asia-Plus from the scene that the body was discovered approximately 20 kilometers downstream from the site where the vehicle plunged into the river on June 17.
Authorities have not yet identified the deceased and have not confirmed whether he was among the occupants of the vehicle involved in the accident.
«The search operation is continuing,» Nozimiyon said.
According to the CES, more than 200 rescuers, specialized emergency personnel, and representatives of other government agencies are taking part in the operation.
Search teams are examining both the surface and underwater sections of the Panj River in Darvoz district of GBAO, Shamsiddin Shohin district of Khatlon province, and other areas along the river’s course.
Earlier, more than 100 CES personnel were deployed to search for Mirzonabot and four other people believed to have been in the vehicle.
Emergency officials said the operation has been complicated by high water levels and a strong river current. Despite the difficult conditions, rescue teams have continued working daily from early morning until late evening.
An operational headquarters has been established at the scene, and emergency units from GBAO, the Kulob region of Khatlon province, and specialized rescue groups have been mobilized to support the search.
The accident occurred on the morning of June 17 on the Dushanbe–Khorog highway in Darvoz district. According to official reports, the vehicle carrying Mirzonabot, his wife, daughter, assistant, and driver plunged into the Panj River.
Search efforts for the missing individuals remain ongoing.
