Media publish draft memorandum of proposed US-Iran agreement
International media outlets have published what they describe as a draft memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran that could be formally signed on June 19 in Switzerland, paving the way for negotiations aimed at ending the conflict between the two countries.
According to the Swiss Foreign Ministry, the signing ceremony is expected to take place at the luxury Bürgenstock resort near Lucerne. Swiss officials said the venue was proposed by Pakistani and Qatari mediators, as well as representatives of the United States and Iran, due to its suitability for high-level security arrangements.
Reports suggest that the memorandum has already been signed electronically, while a formal ceremony is scheduled for Friday.
The United States and Iran announced on June 14 that they had reached a preliminary framework agreement to end hostilities and launch negotiations on a broader settlement. While the full text has not yet been officially released, several media organizations have published draft versions of the document.
According to reports by Bloomberg and other outlets, the draft memorandum outlines a 60-day negotiation period that could lead to a comprehensive agreement addressing sanctions, Iran’s nuclear program, regional security issues, and economic cooperation.
Among the key provisions reportedly included in the draft are:
- An immediate cessation of military operations by the United States, Iran, and their allies, including in Lebanon;
- Mutual commitments to respect sovereignty and refrain from interference in each other’s internal affairs;
- A pledge to negotiate a final agreement within 60 days, with the possibility of an extension;
- The lifting of the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports and the restoration of maritime traffic;
- Iran’s commitment to ensure safe passage for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz;
- Plans for a reconstruction and development program for Iran, reportedly valued at up to 300 $ billion;
- Gradual lifting of U.S., UN, and other sanctions under an agreed timetable;
- Iran’s commitment not to develop or acquire nuclear weapons;
- A freeze on the expansion of Iran’s nuclear program while negotiations continue;
- The resumption of Iranian oil exports and the gradual unfreezing of Iranian assets abroad.
