U.S. cancels planned strike on Iran as Trump signals imminent deal
U.S. President Donald Trump has said he canceled planned strikes on Iran scheduled for Thursday, claiming that negotiations with Tehran have been elevated to the «highest level» of Iranian leadership and received official approval. He expressed confidence that a deal between the parties could be reached soon, according to the BBC’s Russian Service.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that he had ordered the cancellation of the planned «strikes and bombing» after diplomatic talks were advanced and endorsed by Iran’s leadership.
He also claimed that the core elements of a potential agreement had already been coordinated among key stakeholders, including the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, and Egypt.
According to Trump, a maritime blockade on Iran would remain in place until a final deal is signed, with the time and location of the signing to be announced in the near future.
Speaking to reporters later, the US president suggested the agreement could be signed as soon as this weekend, likely somewhere in Europe.
In Tehran, officials reacted cautiously. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said no final decision had been made on the agreement and that the issue remained under review by relevant authorities.
Iran’s Tasnim news agency also noted that Trump has repeatedly claimed imminent agreements with Iran over the past two months, urging caution until official confirmation from Tehran is issued.
Despite this, Trump later told reporters he believed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, had already approved the deal.
Previously, Trump had warned of possible large-scale strikes on Iran and suggested the United States could take control of key elements of Iran’s oil and gas infrastructure.
«We will take control of Kharg Island in the foreseeable future, along with other oil and gas facilities…» Trump said, comparing the approach to US actions in Venezuela.
He later softened his tone, saying that despite the strategic importance of Kharg Island, he was uncertain whether such radical steps would be necessary. Analysts interpreted this as a signal that the White House is still weighing the risks of further escalation with Iran.
Kharg Island is a critical hub of Iran’s oil infrastructure in the Persian Gulf, handling roughly 90% of the country’s oil exports, making it one of the most strategically important assets for Tehran’s economy.
