Tajikistan calls for increased climate financing for vulnerable countries at GEF Assembly
мTajikistan has urged the international community to scale up climate financing and simplify access to funds for vulnerable countries facing the impacts of climate change.
The appeal was made by the Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of Tajikistan, Bahodour Sheralizoda, during the 8th Assembly of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, according to the Committee’s press service.
Sheralizoda said that developing and climate-vulnerable countries require more effective and targeted international support to respond to growing environmental challenges.
He noted that preparations for the GEF-9 funding cycle should prioritize climate adaptation, protection of mountain ecosystems, land restoration, sustainable waste management, and integrated approaches to water, climate, and environmental issues.
The speech also highlighted Tajikistan’s global environmental initiatives, including efforts led by President Emomali Rahmon on water resources, climate action, glacier preservation, and biodiversity protection.
Among these initiatives were the UN General Assembly resolutions declaring March 21 as World Glacier Day and establishing the International Day of the Markhor, which were described as key achievements of Tajikistan’s environmental diplomacy.
Sheralizoda also outlined the country’s national environmental priorities, including the development of green energy, implementation of the National Greening Program through 2040, and protection of mountain ecosystems, glaciers, and biodiversity.
On the sidelines of the GEF Assembly, he held bilateral meetings with representatives of international organizations and government agencies. Discussions focused on expanding cooperation in environmental protection, mobilizing financial and technical assistance, combating plastic pollution, managing hazardous waste, and implementing joint environmental projects.
Participants also exchanged views on advancing Tajikistan’s initiatives in glacier preservation and broader climate action.
The Committee for Environmental Protection said that strengthening international partnerships and mobilizing resources would support the implementation of national environmental priorities and promote the country’s green agenda globally.
