Tajikistan discusses introduction of Chinese early warning platform for natural disasters
The implementation of the Chinese MAZU early warning platform for hazardous natural phenomena was among the key topics discussed in Dushanbe during a visit by representatives of the Xinjiang Meteorological Service of China.
The Chinese delegation paid a working visit to Tajikistan on June 2–3 and held meetings with officials from Tajikistan’s Agency for Hydrometeorology (Hydromet). During the visit, Hydromet Director Abdullo Qurbonzoda met with Zhang Yungang, Deputy Director of the Xinjiang Meteorological Service.According to Hydromet, special attention was given to the introduction of the MAZU platform and the application of artificial intelligence technologies for forecasting dust storms and other atmospheric dust phenomena.
The parties also discussed the implementation and operation of the system in Tajikistan, potential joint projects, and prospects for expanding bilateral cooperation.
Meeting participants reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration in the monitoring and forecasting of hazardous hydrometeorology events, including floods and mudslides. Discussions also covered the development of technologies for predicting adverse weather conditions such as dust storms, heavy rainfall, and strong winds, as well as improving operational meteorological services and the use of numerical weather prediction models.
Meanwhile, Tajik meteorologists have again warned of possible mudflows in several regions of the country.
According to Hydromet, rainfall is expected across Tajikistan on June 8, with heavy precipitation forecast in some areas. As a result, localized mudflows may occur in the districts directly subordinate to the center (RRPs), Khatlon and Sughd provinces, and the western districts of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO).
Forecasters also warned that rising water levels are possible in the Isfara, Zarafshon, Obihingou, Vakhsh, Panj, Yaksou, and Qizilsou (Southern) rivers, as well as in rivers originating from the southern slopes of the Hisor Range.
Residents are advised to observe safety precautions, avoid staying near rivers and other water bodies, refrain from fishing, and limit travel to potentially hazardous areas whenever possible.
