Death toll in M7.0 earthquake off coast of Turkey rises to 79, says RIA Novosti
Citing Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency, Russia’s news agency RIA Novosti reported today that the death toll in a powerful magnitude 7.0 quake in the Aegean Sea that struck Turkey and Greece on Friday has risen to 79 in Turkey.
According to the latest data, as a result of the earthquake, 79 people were killed and 962 were injured, the country’s disaster agency said according to RIA Novosti.
The temblor occurred at 1:51 p.m. Friday local time and originated at a depth of about 20 kilometers near Samos, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It also triggered a tsunami, causing some coastal residential areas to be inundated with sea water.
