After peaceful protest Sunday in Rochester, Warren responds to Trump's tweet
Rochester, N.Y./Washington, D.C. – After a fifth night of protests in Rochester Sunday, President Donald Trump took to Twitter to criticize local leaders as well as those in other cities. In the tweet, the president listed Rochester, Brooklyn and Portland as all having “bad nights” and being “weakly run by radical left Democrat governors and mayors”
. Sunday’s protests began around 8:45 p.m., with demonstrators arriving outside the Public Safety Building around 9:40 p.m. Local church leaders stood as a barrier between police and demonstrators.
The demonstrations remained peaceful, and Rochester Police say no arrests were made.“Last night, the world saw the true spirit of Rochester," Mayor Lovely Warren said in a statement Monday. "Over 1,000 people came together in solidarity to remember the life of Daniel Prude and call for the change that is needed to overcome structural and institutional racism. I am grateful to Pastor Myra Brown, our community elders, and the leaders of the local Black Live Matter movement for helping ensure calm while making their message heard. I am also glad that our Rochester Police Department and Chief Singletary followed my edict to adopt a smaller and more restrained posture. It is clear to me that their actions were crucial to the peace we saw last night."“Lastly,” she continued, “I ask that all involved ignore the commentary from the President. It is clear is his only desire is to bait people to act with hate and incite violence that he believes will benefit him politically. We will not give him what he wants. We will continue to act with grace and do the work necessary improve Rochester and our entire community.”Protests have been held nightly for the past several days in Rochester in response to the death of Daniel Prude last March. Rochester leaders say they are taking steps to make sure what happened to Prude does not occur again, however some demonstrating in recent days have called for the mayor and Police Chief La’Ron Singletary to step down.
