Tajikistan and Japan sign MoU on cooperation on glacier and climate monitoring
Tajikistan and Japan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on glacier monitoring, greenhouse gas emissions, and air quality. The signing ceremony took place on the sidelines of the 30th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, according to the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of Tajikistan (Committee).

The agreement was concluded between Tajikistan’s Agency for Hydrometeorology (Hydromet) and Japanese aerospace company ArkEdge Space Inc. It aims to boost cooperation in remote sensing of glaciers, enhance climate monitoring, and strengthen Tajikistan’s scientific capacity in environmental research.

As part of the event, Hydromet Director Abdullo Qurbonzoda reportedly held a meeting with Kentaro Doi, Vice Minister for Global Environmental Affairs, Ministry of Environment, Japan (MoEJ). Both sides expressed their intention to support joint scientific publications, participate in international conferences, and explore avenues for securing international funding.

According to the Committee, the memorandum reflects Tajikistan’s commitment to advancing climate science, adopting modern monitoring technologies, and fostering international partnerships — a priority for a country that holds the largest reserves of glaciers in Central Asia.
Also on the sidelines of COP30, a thematic event was held on mobilizing climate finance for agriculture. A parallel session, organized by the Green Climate Fund and the Government of Rwanda, focused on financing mechanisms for climate adaptation in the agricultural sector.

A representative of Tajikistan’s Committee for Environmental Protection took part in a panel discussion, presenting the country’s experience in attracting climate finance and outlining national goals for adapting agriculture to the impacts of climate change.
