August 12 total solar eclipse will not be visible from Tajikistan
A total solar eclipse will occur on August 12, but it will not be visible from Tajikistan, Anvar Burizoda, Director of the Institute of Astrophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, told Asia-Plus.
The main eclipse zone will lie far to the west of Tajikistan. Residents of the country will therefore have to watch the event through live broadcasts from locations within the path of totality.
The eclipse is also not listed among astronomical events visible from Dushanbe.
Where will the eclipse be visible?
The path of totality will cross northern Russia, Greenland, Iceland, the North Atlantic, Spain and a small part of northwestern Portugal. A partial eclipse will be visible across much of Europe, most of Canada, parts of the northern United States and northwestern Africa.
At the point of greatest eclipse, totality will last approximately two minutes and 18 seconds. During this brief period, the Moon will completely cover the Sun’s bright disk and the sky will darken as though it were twilight.
In Greenland and Iceland, totality will occur in the late afternoon or early evening. In Spain and northwestern Portugal, the Sun will be eclipsed shortly before sunset.

Why are eclipses important to science?
Burizoda explained that a total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun, completely blocking the solar disk for observers within the path of totality.
During totality, scientists can observe the solar corona — the Sun’s outer atmosphere, which is normally hidden by the intense light of its surface. Studying the corona helps researchers better understand how heat and energy move through the Sun’s atmosphere and into the solar wind.
Burizoda added that eclipses also have educational value because they provide a clear demonstration of the movement and alignment of the Sun, Earth and Moon.
The Institute of Astrophysics studies the Sun and solar activity, as well as comets, asteroids, meteors and other small bodies in the Solar System.
Observations are conducted at the Hisor Astronomical Observatory and the Sanglokh International Astronomical Observatory, which are equipped with optical telescopes and modern receiving instruments.
How to observe a solar eclipse safely
Specialists warn that people must not look directly at the Sun during the partial phase without proper eye protection.
Observers should use certified eclipse glasses or specialised solar viewers. Ordinary sunglasses, regardless of how dark they are, do not provide sufficient protection.
Telescopes, binoculars, cameras and other optical devices must be fitted with solar filters mounted over the front of their lenses. Looking at the Sun through unfiltered optical equipment can cause serious and permanent eye damage.
Protective glasses may be removed only during the brief period of totality, when the Sun’s bright surface is completely covered, and only by observers located directly within the path of the total eclipse.
