Tajikistan ranks 129th in 2026 Legatum Prosperity Index
Tajikistan has ranked 129th out of 161 countries in the 2026 Legatum Prosperity Index.
Among Central Asian countries, Kazakhstan recorded the highest position at 66th, followed by Kyrgyzstan at 87th and Uzbekistan at 94th. Turkmenistan ranked 150th.
According to the index’s official dataset, Tajikistan performed comparatively well in the strength of community ties, ranking 41st. This indicator measures trust between people, participation in community life, mutual assistance, crime levels and attitudes towards local authorities.
Tajikistan ranked 57th in both education and the strength of family relationships. It placed 101st in population health and 119th in living standards.
The country’s lowest ranking was for freedom to express dissent, where it placed 155th. This category assesses the ability of citizens, journalists and civil society organizations to openly express views that differ from those of the authorities.
Tajikistan ranked 149th for the effectiveness and integrity of government institutions. It placed 136th in civil peace, which covers public safety, protection from violence and the functioning of legal institutions. The country ranked 126th in economic freedom.
Across the index’s three main pillars, Tajikistan placed 110th in development, 146th in freedom and 114th in social capital.
The Legatum Prosperity Index measures prosperity more broadly than income alone. It is based on three pillars — development, freedom and society — divided into ten indicators.
The index uses more than 150 indicators drawn from the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the United Nations, the World Health Organization, UNESCO, Gallup, V-Dem and other organizations.
During the period covered by the updated dataset, Tajikistan’s highest position was 125th and its lowest was 141st. Its average ranking was 133rd.
The index’s authors note that the methodology may be revised, meaning changes in rankings can reflect not only developments within individual countries but also updates to the indicators and calculation methods.
Switzerland topped the 2026 ranking, while Eritrea placed last at 161st.
