Car plunges into river in Varzob, one passenger dies
A Dongfeng vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a river in Varzob district, killing one passenger, according to the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense (CES) under the Government of Tajikistan.
The accident reportedly occurred on August 10 at the 39th kilometer of the Dushanbe–Chanak highway, in the Varzob-Qal’a jamoat (rural municipality).
The vehicle was carrying a driver and three passengers. According to preliminary information, the driver may have lost control after becoming drowsy from fatigue.
The driver and two passengers managed to get out of the vehicle on their own. A third passenger, a 42-year-old Gulsarakhon Mahmoudova, drowned.
Rescuers launched a search operation and later recovered the woman’s body about 23 kilometers downstream from the crash site, near the dam of the Varzob Hydropower Plant.
Following the accident, CES urged motorists not to drive while tired or drowsy, to observe speed limits and to exercise particular caution on mountainous roads running alongside rivers.
The agency also reminded drivers and passengers to wear seat belts.
Earlier, on July 19, a car driven by a 32-year-old resident of Tursunzoda crashed through a bridge barrier and fell into a canal in Hisor. The driver and a 37-year-old passenger died at the scene.
