Russian lawmaker once again calls for the introduction of visa regime with Central Asian countries
The member of the State Duma (Russia’s lower chamber of parliament) Sergey Mironov, who is also the leader of the party «Fair Russia — For Truth,» once again called for tougher measures on migration in Russia.
In an interview on the Russia 24 TV channel, he emphasized that the country should implement a visa regime with the Central Asian states.
According to Mironov, migration from these countries needs stricter control. «We must switch to a visa regime with Central Asian countries. There are regions from which our compatriots are forced to leave because, to put it simply, 'the newcomers have taken everything,' and they live by their own customs and laws,» he said.
Mironov suggested abandoning the patent system in favor of a shift to a rotational work method. He emphasized that migrants should not live in populated areas but instead near the construction sites where they work. The work principle, according to him, should be simple: «Arrive, work, earn, leave.»
He also stated that migrants who commit crimes should be punished according to the law, and their families and relatives should be deported immediately from Russia.
This is not the first time Mironov has called for stricter migration policies. Earlier, he expressed that «this kind of migration is not needed» in Russia, adding that only a small portion of the migrants work, while the rest come for personal or family reasons, thus burdening the social sphere.
Previously, Mironov had also called for the introduction of a visa regime with several Central Asian countries, arguing that the uncontrolled influx of labor migrants has «flooded the entire country.»
In May this year, he proposed removing the constitutional provision allowing dual citizenship. «It is time to abandon the institution of dual citizenship. It is time to choose which country you tie your fate to,» Mironov said in an interview with TASS.
It should be noted that Russia has a dual citizenship agreement with only one country — Tajikistan. The agreement on regulating dual citizenship issues, signed in September 1995, allows citizens of both countries to hold Russian and Tajik citizenship simultaneously.
Sergey Mironov (born February 14, 1953) is a Russian politician. He was chairman of the Federation Council, the upper house of the Russian parliament, from 2001 to 2011. Currently, he leads the faction of A Just Russia — For Truth in the State Duma.
Mironov was a candidate in the 2004 presidential election. He was not considered to be a serious candidate and was quoted as saying: «We all want Vladimir Putin to be the next president.» He polled less than one per cent of the vote.
He became the leader of the A Just Russia — For Truth Party in October 2006. This party was formed by uniting Rodina, Mironov’s Russian Party of Life, and the Russian Pensioners' Party.
