Dushanbe plans to install AI-powered traffic lights near schools
Dushanbe plans to introduce an AI-powered road safety system near schools to monitor traffic, detect potential hazards and alert students and school staff to dangerous situations.
Tajikistan’s Ministry of Transport and South Korean company KUKJE ST Co., Ltd. signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the project in Dushanbe on October 29.
According to the ministry, the agreement followed a meeting between Transport Minister Azim Ibrohim and a South Korean delegation led by the company’s vice president, Ji Ho Han.
The project involves upgrading road infrastructure on Dushanbe’s main streets and introducing an intelligent road safety system called «School Zone.»
The system will use AI-powered traffic lights and cameras to monitor and analyze traffic conditions. It will also be able to detect potentially dangerous situations and promptly alert schoolchildren and school staff.
The authorities have not yet specified which schools will be covered or when installation will begin.
Five transport projects supported by South KoreaAccording to the Ministry of Transport, five transport projects worth a combined 7 $ million were launched in Tajikistan with South Korean support in 2025–2026.

Three have already been completed: a feasibility study for a logistics center in the Kulob Free Economic Zone, a preliminary study for a proposed Dushanbe metro line from the State Circus to the capital’s eastern gates, and advisory support for the metro project.
Two projects remain underway: a feasibility study for the Jaloliddin Balkhi–Panji Poyon railway and the development of Dushanbe’s intelligent transport system.
The two sides also discussed prospects for further cooperation in the transport sector.
Dushanbe has previously installed AI-powered traffic lights at two intersections: Rudaki Avenue and Bukhoro Street near the Press House, and Rudaki Avenue and Karamov Street near the Agrarian University.
These traffic lights analyze vehicle flows and automatically adjust the duration of green signals according to traffic volume.
