Dushanbe to add 360 public transport vehicles from September 1

Dushanbe to add 360 public transport vehicles from September 1

Dushanbe will add 360 buses, trolleybuses and minibuses (fixed-route shared taxi) to its public transport network from September 1 as passenger numbers rise with the start of the new academic year, Firouz Ghafourzoda, head of the Dushanbe Public Transport Service, told Asia-Plus.
According to Ghafourzoda, the city increases the number of vehicles on public transport routes each year ahead of the school year, when demand grows due to the return of schoolchildren and university students.
From September 1, the number of buses and trolleybuses operating in the capital will rise from 350 to 410, while the number of minibuses will increase from 900 to 1,200.
The additional minibuses will primarily be deployed on routes with the highest passenger traffic.
Dushanbe currently has 90 electric buses and six electric minibuses in operation. City authorities plan to gradually expand the electric transport fleet, including increasing the number of electric minibuses to 40.
Taxi fleet also set to expand
Ghafourzoda said Dushanbe residents are currently served by around 12,500 taxis operated by four companies.
In June 2025, Dushanbe authorities granted operating rights in the capital to Eco-Taxi, Olucha-Auto, Koviyon and Safo-Taxi, initially allowing each company to operate up to 3,000 vehicles.
The city later increased the overall quota by another 2,000 vehicles, allowing the four companies to operate a combined fleet of up to 14,000 taxis.
According to Ghafourzoda, another 500 taxis are expected to be added in September, bringing the number actually operating in the city to around 13,000.
Dushanbe residents have repeatedly complained about shortages of public transport and poor service on some routes. The problem typically becomes more acute at the start of the academic year and during the colder months, when demand for public transport increases.
