Uzbekistan launches project to send seasonal farm workers to the United States
Uzbekistan’s Migration Agency has launched preparations for sending citizens to the United States for seasonal agricultural work under the H-2A visa program.
The initiative has been coordinated with a major U.S. recruitment company, whose name has not yet been disclosed, Fergana news agency reported, citing the agency’s press service.
Under the H-2A program, Uzbek citizens will be able to take up temporary agricultural jobs in the United States. Depending on employers’ needs, the work may include harvesting, crop maintenance and other types of farm labor.
The H-2A visa is tied to a specific employer and position, meaning workers cannot independently look for another job or change employers while in the United States under the same visa.
U.S. employers participating in the program are required to pay workers the legally mandated wage, provide free housing and cover or reimburse eligible transportation costs related to travel to and from the workplace.
The program is temporary and does not provide a direct pathway to permanent residency in the United States.
Training and selection
As part of the project, Uzbekistan plans to develop special training programs based on the requirements of U.S. employers. Prospective workers will be offered English-language and vocational training.
The authorities also plan to introduce a certification system and a transparent selection process based on candidates’ professional skills.
Before departure, participants will receive information about basic U.S. labor regulations and their rights as workers. Once their seasonal employment ends, Uzbekistan’s Migration Agency plans to facilitate their return home.
The agency said further details on employer requirements, eligibility criteria and the application process will be published later on the Xorijda Ish («Work Abroad») Telegram channel.
