Dushanbe high-rise fire raises questions over fire safety and emergency equipment
A fire broke out on August 15 at apartment building No. 13 on Bukhoro Street in Dushanbe. The blaze was extinguished without being reported as a major incident, but one resident later contacted Asia-Plus, raising concerns about malfunctioning firefighting equipment and fire-safety shortcomings inside the building.
According to the State Fire Service, the fire broke out at around 18:03 in an apartment, in an area where air-conditioning units were installed, affecting the 13th and 14th floors. Heavy smoke and open flames were reported.
«Four fire engines and operational personnel were dispatched to the scene. The fire was completely extinguished at 18:58. The affected area was approximately 20 square meters,» the agency said.
The State Fire Service said the preliminary cause was a malfunctioning air conditioner belonging to one of the residents. The agency said further details of the incident would be released later.
