Boxers from five countries compete at international tournament in Khujand

A four-day international boxing tournament featuring athletes from five countries kicked off in Sughd province’s capital Khujand, on August 5.
The Open Boxing Championship of Sughd Province, competing for the regional governor’s cup, is taking place at the Sughd Arena sports complex. The tournament is dedicated to the 35th anniversary of Tajikistan’s independence.
Boxers from Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Egypt are reportedly taking part.
The competition is being among senior athletes. Men will compete in 10 weight categories, while women will contest medals in two divisions. The final bouts are scheduled for August 8.
Tajikistan is represented by a number of established and promising boxers, including Mehron Shafiyev in the 50 kg category; Mehroj Sufijonov and Anushervon Fozilov at 55 kg; Akmal Ubaidov and Damir Muybalikhonov at 60 kg; Ruslan Ghafourov and Romiz Sharifzoda at 65 kg; and Murod Ashouraliyev and Shamsher Saidov at 70 kg.
Abubakr Ghafourov and Shahboz Haitov are competing at 75 kg, while Nekrouz Salimov and Ramoil Qurbonov will represent the country in the 80 kg division. Parviz Karimov is competing at 90 kg, and Muhammad Abroriddinov will enter the over-90 kg category.
Mijgona Samadova, an experienced international competitor, is among Tajikistan’s leading representatives in the women’s tournament. She is competing in the 57 kg category.
Organizers say the event has brought together some of the region’s strongest boxers. The tournament also provides athletes with an opportunity to test their form and gain valuable experience against international opponents.
