Body of unidentified woman recovered from Varzob River
Rescuers have recovered the body of an unidentified woman from the Varzob River in Tajikistan’s Varzob district, Orif Nozimyon, a spokesperson for the Committee for Emergency Situations (CES), told Asia-Plus.
According to preliminary information from the Varzob Police Department, the incident occurred at around 1:30 p.m. on July 28 near the 21st kilometer of the highway, in the Varzobqala jamoat (rural municipality).
Authorities said the woman entered the river for reasons that remain unclear and drowned.
Her body was handed over to the relevant authorities for a forensic examination. Officials are working to establish her identity and determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
The Committee for Emergency Situations urged residents to observe safety rules near rivers and other bodies of water and to immediately alert emergency services in the event of an accident.
In a separate incident in April 2026, a 17-year-old school student Rahmatullo Mardiktoyev rescued a girl who had jumped from a bridge on Sohili Street into the Dushanbe River.
The teenager pulled her from the water and took her to Istiqlol Hospital. Preliminary police information indicated that the incident followed a family dispute.
Dushanbe police later thanked Mardiktoyev for his civic responsibility and presented him with gifts and a certificate of honor for saving the girl’s life.
