Bodies of two Tajik border guards recovered from Panj River
Rescuers have recovered the bodies of two Tajik border guards who drowned in the Panj River in Farkhor District of Khatlon province on July 24, the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense (CES) said.
The bodies were found at around 8:30 a.m. on July 28, approximately five kilometers downstream from the site of the incident, near the confluence of the Surkhob and Panj rivers, committee spokesperson Orif Nozimyon told Asia-Plus.
The servicemen were identified as Private Bilol Karimov and Lieutenant Qurbonali Yormad.
The search operation involved rescuers from the committee’s specialized search and rescue service, as well as officers from its Khatlon regional unit in the Kulob area.
The bodies were handed over to the relevant authorities, Nozimyon said.
According to the committee, the two servicemen from border post No. 5 of military unit 0307 drowned at around 1:14 p.m. on July 24. The cause of the incident has not yet been officially established.
Radio Liberty’s Tajik Service, known locally as Radio Ozodi, citing a source within the Khatlon emergency authorities, reported that the bodies were taken to Kulob for forensic examination. They are expected to be buried in their home districts of Khovaling and Farkhor.
Residents of the village where 19-year-old Bilol Karimov lived said the bodies were found on the bank of the Panj River near Hisor village in Farkhor district. They said the current had carried them about two kilometers downstream from the scene of the incident.
A law enforcement source in Khatlon told Radio Ozodi that the border guards drowned while carrying out an official assignment. According to the source, they had been attempting to remove Afghan gold prospectors from a small island belonging to Tajikistan.
The authorities have not released further details about the incident.
