Russia resumes funding for Russian-Tajik Slavonic University after rector change
Russia has resumed funding for the Russian-Tajik Slavonic University in Dushanbe following the appointment of Alexei Zolotukhin as its new rector.
Speaking at a news conference in Dushanbe, Zolotukhin said the allocated funds had already been transferred in full to the university’s account and that its budget had been formally approved.
According to him, the university should no longer face difficulties in paying staff salaries or student stipends.
Funding had been suspended after Ilhomuddin Ibrohimzoda was appointed rector. The Russian side said his appointment had not been coordinated with Moscow in accordance with the established procedure.
Zolotukhin said Russia’s concerns were not related to Ibrohimzoda personally, but to the failure to follow the required legal process. As a result, most funding was temporarily suspended, although salary payments to university employees continued.
On July 17, 2026, Ibrohimzoda was dismissed as rector and appointed deputy minister of education and science.
Alexei Zolotukhin subsequently took over as rector. He had previously served as the university’s vice rector for research and innovation.
