Tajikistan outlines four measures to help forests adapt to climate change
Tajikistan’s Forestry Agency has identified four main measures to help the country’s forests adapt to climate change, Deputy Director Davlatali Sharifzoda said at a news conference in Dushanbe.
«Tajikistan is one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change. Forests play a special role in adaptation, which makes their protection and development particularly important,» he said.
According to Sharifzoda, the measures are being implemented under Tajikistan’s national climate adaptation strategy.
The first measure is to replace the regional distribution of seedlings with their local cultivation by individual forestry enterprises.
The second focuses on growing native, endemic and environmentally important species of trees and shrubs.
«During the Soviet period, seedlings were cultivated mainly for their economic value. Now, taking climate change into account, we grow more than 50 species of trees and shrubs. Mixed forests and native endemic species adapt more quickly,» Sharifzoda said.
The third measure is the introduction of joint forest management involving local communities.
The approach was initially tested in several districts under pilot projects and was later expanded to all organizations and institutions within the Forestry Agency.
Under the system, state forest land is assigned to local residents through agreements. They are responsible for protecting forests, restoring plantations and collecting wild forest products.
International organizations support these activities through projects that provide irrigation systems, seedlings and other assistance.
The fourth measure is the introduction of sustainable forest management based on ten-year development plans.
«For the first time, Tajikistan is conducting a national forest inventory. Based on the data collected, a ten-year plan will be developed for each forestry enterprise, and future work will be organized accordingly,» Sharifzoda said.
