Marriages involving foreigners decline in Tajikistan
Tajikistan registered 42 marriages between its citizens and foreign nationals or stateless persons in the first half of 2026, Justice Minister Muzaffar Ashouriyon said at a news conference.
During the same period in 2025, 58 such marriages were registered. The figure therefore fell by 16 cases.
Ashouriyon also said that 3,526 divorces were registered in Tajikistan during the first six months of 2026, 591 fewer than in the same period last year.
Following these divorces, 3,111 children were left living in single-parent households, 521 fewer than a year earlier.
The Committee on Family and Women’s Affairs previously reported that 27,563 marriages were registered nationwide in the first half of 2026, down by 2,793 from the same period in 2025.
Another 141 marriages were registered following court decisions allowing the legal marriage age to be lowered.
Despite the decline in divorces, the committee said family breakdown remained one of the country’s most pressing social problems.
What are the requirements for marrying a foreign national?
Citizens of Tajikistan may marry foreign nationals provided they comply with the requirements of the country’s Family Code.
One of the main conditions is that the foreign national must have lived in Tajikistan for at least 12 months before the marriage is registered.
Other requirements include:
A prenuptial agreement may be amended or terminated only with the mutual consent of both spouses.
The agreement generally ceases to apply after divorce, except for obligations that the couple specifically agreed would remain in force after the marriage ends.
