Number of registered vehicles in Tajikistan tops 800,000
More than 800,000 vehicles were registered in Tajikistan as of January 1, 2026, according to the Ministry of Transport.
The number increased by 99,731 vehicles, or 14,2%, compared with a year earlier.
More than 67,200 vehicles, accounting for about 8,4% of the total, are used for commercial purposes, including freight and passenger transport, taxi services and logistics.
The number of enterprises operating in the transport sector rose by 120 to 2,957. Of these, 2,579 are engaged in road transport, 241 in road infrastructure and 137 in the railway sector.
Tajikistan currently has 920 regular domestic and international passenger routes, including bus, trolleybus and railway services. Their number increased by 18 over the year.
In the first half of 2026, all modes of transport carried more than 76 million tons of freight and over 552 million passengers. Freight volumes rose by 14% year on year, while passenger traffic increased by 8%.
Road transport accounts for virtually all passenger traffic within the country.
Railways, meanwhile, continue to play an important role in international freight and passenger services. According to the ministry, rail transport handled 70% of cross-border freight and 60,4% of cross-border passenger traffic during the six-month period.
Transit freight reached 32,700 tons, an increase of 13,900 tons, or 74%, compared with the same period last year.
The ministry said the growth in transit traffic could help strengthen Tajikistan’s position as a regional transit country.
