Women released under amnesty need support to rebuild their lives, says Committee for Women’s Affairs

Women released under amnesty need support to rebuild their lives, says Committee for Women’s Affairs
Tajik society should support women released under the recent amnesty and help them reintegrate so they do not reoffend, Ms. Bunafsha Fayziddinzoda, chairperson of the Committee on Family and Women’s Affairs, said at a news conference in Dushanbe on July 15.
According to Fayziddinzoda, the Committee is working with the Ministry of Labor, Migration and Employment and local authorities to provide released women with employment assistance, vocational training and social support.
«Letters have been sent to cities and districts requesting that lists of women released under the amnesty be compiled, their living conditions assessed and the necessary assistance provided,» she said.
Fayziddinzoda added that women may contact the committee directly for help finding employment, obtaining vocational training, learning a trade or receiving psychological and other forms of support.
Women released under the amnesty are also expected to be given priority when applications for presidential grants are considered.
Nearly 300 women released from Nurek penal colony
The administration of the women’s correctional colony in Nurek (facility YAS 3/8), the only women’s penal colony in Tajikistan, previously reported that 297 inmates had been released under the new amnesty law.
The Law on Amnesty was adopted by the Majlisi Namoyandagon, the lower house of Tajikistan’s parliament, on June 16, 2026. President Emomali Rahmon signed the law the same day, and it was officially published several days later in the parliamentary newspaper Sadoi Mardum.
Under the law, the amnesty is expected to apply to 18,038 convicted people within two months. More than 11,000 are to be released from correctional facilities, while the sentences of the remaining prisoners will be reduced.
