Tajikistan plans to launch lithium mining project within a year
Tajikistan plans to launch a lithium mining project at the Namadgut deposit in Ishkashim District of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) within a year, Minister of Industry and New Technologies Sherali Kabir has said.
According to the minister, around 80% of the equipment required for the project has already been brought into the country, while extensive geological exploration has been completed at the site.
«Regarding lithium, the president recently instructed us during a meeting in Sughd Province to launch the project within one year,» Kabir said.
The Namadgut deposit is classified as a pegmatite deposit. In addition to lithium, it contains niobium, tantalum and beryllium.
Kabir acknowledged that global lithium prices have fallen significantly. However, he said the presence of other valuable minerals could improve the project’s commercial prospects.
«The price of lithium has declined considerably. However, because prices for the other components remain stable, this project has strong prospects,» the minister said.
Kabir believes the development of lithium mining and processing could help Tajikistan attract major international companies involved in the production of electric vehicles and battery cells.
He said the sector could also create opportunities to establish high-value-added manufacturing in the country rather than limiting operations to raw-material extraction.
«I believe Tajikistan will have an important role to play in the lithium sector,» Kabir said.

The government has also called for greater attention to the domestic extraction and processing of lithium and other non-ferrous metals, with the aim of eventually producing finished goods in Tajikistan.
