Over 3,500 historical and cultural monuments digitized in Tajikistan
More than 3,500 historical and cultural monuments in Tajikistan have been digitized as part of a nationwide effort to update the State Register of protected heritage sites, according to the Agency for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Heritage under the Government of Tajikistan.
The updated main list of monuments has been prepared for a new edition of the State Register. In addition, a separate directory has been compiled for the capital, Dushanbe, which includes 63 architectural and monumental heritage sites.
The announcement was made by the agency’s director, Sherali Khojazoda, at a news conference in Dushanbe on July 6.
According to Khojazoda, the re-registration and digitization process was carried out throughout 2025 and the first half of 2026. The initiative is part of the implementation of a presidential decree declaring 2025–2030 the «Years of Development of the Digital Economy and Innovations.»
He said a dedicated website and specialized electronic system have already been developed to support the digitization process.
Khojazoda noted that the State Register currently includes more than 1,060 monuments of republican and international significance. He added that the register, approved by the government in 2018, previously listed more than 960 historical, cultural, and monumental sites.
He explained that heritage sites in Tajikistan are classified into three categories: local, republican, and international significance. Only monuments of republican and international importance are included in the State Register.
The agency also reported that a separate informational directory covering the monuments of Dushanbe has been completed as part of the broader documentation effort.
