Tajikistan plans to open National Theater by Independence Day
Tajikistan plans to officially open its new National Theater on Sept. 9, marking the country’s Independence Day, Minister of Culture Matlubakhon Sattoriyon announced at a news conference in Dushanbe on Monday, July 6.
The theater, which the presidential administration describes as the largest in Central Asia, is nearing completion after more than a decade of construction.
Located in central Dushanbe next to the National Museum and the State Flag Park, the project was launched in 2015 after President Emomali Rahmon laid its foundation stone. Construction was initially expected to take five years, with an estimated budget of 680 million somoni, but the project faced repeated delays.

Work was suspended in 2017 because of financial constraints before resuming. Construction restarted again in July 2024 and is now in its final phase, according to the Ministry of Culture.
The National Theater was formally established by presidential decree on Dec. 1, 2025, and will operate under the President’s Executive Office. The Ministry of Finance has been tasked with funding the institution, while the State Committee on Investment and State-owned Property Management (GosKomInvest) has been instructed to provide temporary premises for the theater company until the new building opens.
Earlier this year, Sattoriyon dismissed speculation that the new venue would replace or consolidate Dushanbe’s existing theaters, saying it would operate as a separate institution.
