Search continues for bodies of GBAO governor Alisher Mirzonabot and companions after fatal crash
The bodies of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) Governor Alisher Mirzonabot and the four people traveling with him have not yet been recovered following a fatal road accident that sent their vehicle into the Panj River, the Emergencies Committee under the Government of Tajikistan told Asia-Plus.
According to the committee, search and rescue operations continued until nightfall on June 17 but did not yield any results. The operation was suspended overnight and resumed on the morning of June 18.
The committee said five people were in the vehicle at the time of the accident:
The Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament) Speaker Rustam Emomali expressed his condolences following the tragic death of Mirzonabot, who also served as Deputy Chairman of the upper chamber of parliament.
In a message of sympathy, Rustam Emomali said members of the Majlisi Milli deeply mourn the loss of Mirzonabot and extend their condolences to his family, relatives, and colleagues in the executive authorities of GBAO.
«The deceased was distinguished by his high moral qualities, strong sense of responsibility, and devotion to the state and the nation. Through his contributions to the development of society, he earned the respect and recognition of his colleagues. The bright memory of Alisher Khudoberdi Mirzonabot will forever remain in the hearts of the people,» the statement said.
Details of the accident
According to Tajikistan’s Interior Ministry, the accident occurred at approximately 10:40 a.m. on June 17 at the 282nd kilometer of the Dushanbe–Khorog highway, between the villages of Zigar and Yakhchisor in GBAO’s Darvoz district.
Investigators say the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 carrying the governor was traveling at high speed when the driver, Sino Muborakshoyev, lost control of the vehicle. The SUV reportedly struck two utility poles and a roadside barrier before plunging into the Panj River.
Alisher Mirzonabot, his wife, daughter, aide, and driver were all inside the vehicle.
