“16 apartments completely destroyed”: authorities identify likely cause of fire in Nurek residential building
Authorities in the city of Nurek have said that a short circuit in electrical wiring is believed to be the most likely cause of a fire that destroyed a two-story residential building in the village of Langari, leaving around 50 people homeless.
The fire broke out at approximately 3:00 p.m. on June 7 and was fully extinguished later the same evening, according to local officials.
An official source within the Nurek mayor’s office told Asia-Plus on June 8 that no injuries were reported in the incident.
«The fire was extinguished by the evening, but the building, made of wooden structures and in use for many years, was completely burned down,» said the source. «Sixteen apartments were destroyed. Fourteen families, or about 50 people in total, lived in the building.»
According to the city’s administration, the affected residents are currently being temporarily accommodated by neighbors. Emergency services and representatives of the Emergencies Committee continue to work at the site, while an investigation into the exact cause of the fire is ongoing.
Although the preliminary assessment points to a malfunction in the electrical system, authorities say no final conclusions have yet been made.

Fires in residential and public buildings are relatively frequent in Tajikistan, particularly in urban areas. Earlier this month, on June 3, a fire in a ten-story residential building in Somoniyon, the administrative center of Roudaki district, caused damage estimated at 36,500 somoni. In that case, officials said the fire was caused by a pot left unattended on an electric stove.
